Declines in mental health during the pandemic can arise due to reasons such as isolation, economic insecurity, concerns over health, loss of a loved one, relationship problems, and having difficulty with adapting to life changes in general. It is not uncommon for people’s mental health to worsen during this time, with people experiencing common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. This can be especially true for people who had pre-existing mental health struggles.
In addition, this crisis may increase suicide rates during and after the pandemic, especially for those who have stress-related psychological conditions including mood and substance use disorders as they are associated with suicidal behaviour. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pose mental health consequences that persist for a long time and peak later than the actual pandemic.
